There was a large turnout at the protest held outside Dail Eireann by Minceirs Whiden – the Traveller lobby group, in response to the lack of appropriate accommodation being provided by county councils in Ireland. The protest comes in the wake of the terrible fire tragedy in Carrickmines. A minute’s silence was observed for the victims.
Hughie Friel of DTP and Minceirs Whiden ( Travellers talking) called on the government to “tackle anti Traveller racism” and also called on “the Government to re-instate the Traveller accommodation budget, which was cut by almost 90 per cent from €40 million in 2008 to €4 million in 2015,”
“The overcrowding and unsafe conditions is a government failure and a breach of human rights” said Pavee Points Martin Collins.
